This is comfort food season. And while I have been making oatmeal smoothies for my son in the morning because he doesn’t fancy the texture of oatmeal, I realise that his stomach is better with a hot breakfast. Of course, that’s not news to my Jamaican mother because under no circumstance was I ever allowed to leave her house without something hot in the morning even if it meant tea, some herbal tisane, Horlicks or hot chocolate to accompany some other room temperature food.
So yesterday morning I decided to rise to the occasion and be an old-fashioned Jamaican mom. I made him apple cinnamon oatmeal from scratch with all the bells and whistles. Because Jamaicans just don’t do “plain or ordinary” when it comes to food. This is definitely a recipe my mother and grandmother would approve. When she was with me in Dubai for his birth, she made me an assortment of porridge from scratch daily. It’s great for breast milk she said and I was feeding him breast milk only for 6 months. So this stuff works!
She also made soups daily for the same reason. And they also helped my body heal from my emergency C-section. So understand that our way of cooking is very healing and restorative. Plus her first ingredient is always a generous outpouring of love.
And that was mine in this Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal.
Try my Can’t be Beet Oatmeal Next
If you are tired of regular oatmeal you’ve got to try my Can’t Be Beat Oatmeal next! It’s been making waves across the internet!
I used organic old-fashioned oats for this and I added in some chia seeds for omega 3, extra fibre and other nutrients. I decided to both cook with chia as well as sprinkle some uncooked seeds on top.
I made enough for either one teen or two small children. Or one small child for two days. To reheat, simply add milk on low heat on the stave. You could microwave it but I don’t have one so we reheat our food on the stovetop.
I also like to drizzle my oatmeal with cream on top but I didn’t have any on hand. Try that and tell me if you like it.
This is still a very quick and easy breakfast and very healthy for all intents and purposes. I know they sell instant packets of Quaker Oats and Apple Cinnamon oatmeal but this is scrumptious from scratch and so easy, a kid could do it. Plus you get to control how much sugar is in the oatmeal. My son doesn’t fancy overly sweet things because he has had so many things from scratch so his palate cannot process the over-sweetened commercial threshold, especially from the US manufacturers.
Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal
This spiced apple cinnamon oatmeal is breakfast comfort food in a bowl and increased nutritional value coming from the addition of High Omega 3 chia seeds. This recipe is spiced perfectly and a hit with both kids and adults. This makes either 2 servings for small kids or 1 serving for a teen or adult.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup organic traditional oatmeal
- 1 small apple, peeled and medium diced (any variety on hand)
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon chia seeds
- 3 passes of nutmeg on a nutmeg grater (a tiny pinch)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/8 teaspoon almond extract
- Pinch of Himalayan pink salt/ sea salt
- 1 cup water/ milk
- Brown sugar to taste
Instructions
- In a small saucepan on medium heat, add oatmeal and other ingredients EXCEPT brown sugar to either water or milk (whichever you are cooking in). If cooking in water, you will use less milk at the end when sweetening (about 1/4 cup or more).
- Stir at intervals with a silicone spatula ensuring the oatmeal doesnt stick to the bottom of the pot.
- After about 10 minutes, add sugar to taste. If you cooked in water, add about 1/4 cup of milk as well. Stir and remove from heat.
- Serve and enjoy.
Notes
I like to cook in milk for kids for added protein. But that means more attention must be paid to stirring. Nevertheless, you can easily cook in water and add milk or even cream at the end as part of the sweetening process.

I made this with almond milk and it was delicious! Such a lovely winter breakfast. It was nice with some dried fruits and nuts.
