Last year, I remember making a funny reel about what Mother’s Day looks like for us mothers who are divorced with young kids– we pretty have to make our own food and deal with the whiny kids.
This year, my reel was a lot different. Jaja, who is now all of 9 years old, carefully planned and executed lunch all on his own! For great ideas for brunch recipes, check these out from our blog.
Mother’s Day Brunch Kid Edition
It was really nice to see him so excited about planning my surprise.
I have now really tightened up my diet again and it was interesting to see him pay such close attention to design a menu that honours my eating. Even though I don’t do breakfast anymore, he was so excited, I had to acquiesce this once just for him. He was so excited!
I must also publicly acknowledge his teachers Jufrouw Jeanelle and Jufrouw Esther (Jufrouw is “Teacher/Miss” in Dutch) who helped him with the hand crafted cards and flowers and even with a vanilla cappuccino blend. He also told me they insisted that the kids needed to make breakfast for their Mamas this morning. There’s a special place in heaven for teachers who go out of their way to help students honour their parents in such wonderful ways. He told me “You deserve it, Mama!”
He said he made a mistake with the blend so he ended up having to use my decaf grounds in the cupboard. I didnt even know he could make coffee. He knows how to brew tea. But he did well to use the Japanese sake dispenser, and made a very lovely almost cold brew.
Yesterday, as he was doing his prep in secret, he bragged, “My menu will make vegans wish they ate meat!” Indeed Jaja!
His ham and cheese scrambled eggs, though well thought out, was almost well executed except for the fact that he went WAY OVERBOARD on the added seasonings (not sure where that came from) and he clearly didnt taste it. Everything else on the platter was perfection. The ham and cheese roll ups with the fresh coriander were a stroke of culinary genius. The 72% dark chocolate dipped into sugar free maple syprup was the perfect combination to the black coffee and the cheese as was the syrup dipped Fuji apples.
I can’t believe I have just reviewed my son’s first 4 course meal execution at 9 years old. The future is looking really bright!
Just thinking about it, this goes to show that my method of raising him in my kitchen and teaching kids to cook even in my fine cooking class experiences, really works! They end up learning such independence and essential life skills that will benefit them and their own families in the future and in the meantime, you will be privy such such delightful surprises!
Happy Mothers Day to all!
