This morning, as I sat reflecting on my last 7 years in a very small place (Aruba is a country with a population of a whopping 120, 000), I thought just how much of a challenge it has been to be the proverbial big fish in a small pond.

How to go from local to global.

As the child of a small nation myself (3 million resident and equal amounts living as expatriates), I know intimately how it feels to be in a space so small that you feel suffocated. 

And please hear me with ears of understanding, I am not speaking from conceit, but from a place of level-headed, grounded confidence. 

“The end product of the knowledge of God is confidence”- JOSHUA SELMAN. 

And yes there is a difference.  

I find that small spaces often don’t know the difference. 

Your confident carriage is often mistaken as conceit and cockiness, which is rather unfortunate. 

It’s as if the environment feels that you are trying to be larger than they are comfortable to accommodate and so it starts to pressure you to shrink down to fit with the status quo. 

But are you a miniature ornamental bonsai or a grand oak of righteousness and purpose?

If you find yourself in relationships -business or personal, jobs and other environments in which your growth is being hindered and you are not challenged to expand in magnanimous ways, it’s time to shift or be stunted. 

To be stunted is to be inhibited, impeded, hindered, hampered, restricted, retarded, slowed, curbed, checked, arrested, withheld, stopped.

Let that sink in. 

This year is indeed an epic year, but it belongs to those who are bold enough to take it by force. 

It’s the year to stop playing small and dimming your light in order to make others who are less confident feel less intimidated. 

You won’t take back territory for your generations by apologising for your presence or being furtive about your purpose. 

And I am NOT speaking about being loud and brash, but simply to come up into a boldness that comes when you fully access your God-given identity and purpose. 

When you truly tap into that which you are the only one privileged to carry, your whole world will shift… and you will truly break out of your confined spaces into the greatness you were created to occupy in work and life.

Your life is unique and this is the year to learn to harness and hone your story for glory.
